Moonki MO-R88BT [REVIEW]

Powerful little guy, and it has lights!

Moonki Sound is a new brand dedicated to audio devices that we've had the chance to explore. In this case, we tested the MO-R88BT, a little speaker that packs a punch.

The MO-R88BT is a Bluetooth speaker that will delight users who are looking for an extremely portable device to listen to music, give presentations, or watch videos. It's compact, measuring just 128x90x90 mm, and while it weighs a solid 488 grams, it is capable of delivering a total power output of 16W (2x8W).

Thanks to the Bluetooth standard, it can play audio from sources such as phones, tablets, or laptops up to 10 meters away (though in our tests, it reached even farther without any loss of quality), all completely wirelessly. It also features a built-in 1500mAh battery, providing an estimated 6 hours of autonomy at medium volume. Charging is done via a USB-C connector from any PC (the cable is provided), or if we prefer, we can use a wall charger like the one used for smartphones. To fully charge it, it takes about 3 and a half hours.

It’s a device that comes in black, but as a bonus, it features 2 RGB rings that can create different lighting effects to spice things up.

The specifications of the MO-R88BT:

Inside the MO-R88BT, we have two 40mm speakers, providing solid audio and decent bass for its size (according to Moonki, the frequency response ranges from 20Hz to 20kHz). In addition to having a built-in microphone for hands-free use, the MO-R88BT has something interesting: if we use two MO-R88BTs and pair them, we get a complete stereo TWS system.

Finally, it has an IPX6 certification, making it water-resistant (though not submersible, as that would require IPX7 certification). This makes it an ideal speaker to take to the beach or pool in the summer.

Testing the MO-R88BT

We used the MO-R88BT with multiple devices: an iPhone, an iPad, and a Bluetooth laptop for different tasks.

  • With the phone: Listening to music works perfectly. The volume controls and track control work well, and the call quality is very good.
  • Using a tablet: We watched a few YouTube videos, and the sound was clear and good (especially in the mid and mid-high frequencies, which have great clarity). Despite its small size, it produces decent bass. When the speaker is turned "all the way up," there's a slight distortion, but lowering the volume a bit makes it disappear, and it still provides a fairly powerful sound.
  • Finally, with the laptop: We gave a presentation with videos in a 5x5 meter room, and the MO-R88BT provided significantly better audio than the built-in laptop speakers, thanks to its 16W of power.

Conclusion:

The MO-R88BT is a product that enters the Bluetooth speaker market at an affordable price of 9,600 Argentine pesos.

As positive aspects, we can highlight that it delivers very good sound (especially in the vocal range), it sounds loud for its size, the Bluetooth connection works flawlessly, it has RGB lights for those who enjoy that feature, and it allows you to have real stereo sound when you pair two speakers together.

If you're looking for a compact wireless speaker to carry in your backpack or bag when you're out and about, and one that can still produce decent volume, this MO-R88BT is all you need. For all these reasons, we award the Moonki MO-R88BT the Gold Medal [IRROMPIBLES].

Note: We would like to thank Walter Barnes from b.Otro Plan and the people at Moonki for lending us the speaker for its review.
